Question?: Asperger Syndrome Test

Sandy asks…

Who would an adult go to get tested for aspergers syndrome and dyslexia?

Counselor? General psychologist? Someone specializing in aspergers?

I’m 20 and I believe that I could possibly have aspergers and a mild form is dyslexia. Also, do you think aspergers and dyslexia are related at all?

Thanks.

admin answers:

You need a “clinical psychologist” who specialises in Autism Spectrum conditions.

There may be a link between AS and dyslexia, with a significant number (but nowehere near the majority) having both, but that doesn’t mean there’s a causal relationship.

Question?: Autistic Artist

Steven asks…

How common is it for people with Aspergers not to have a special interest?

I don’t have a special interest. There are just things that I am passionate about the same as other people so I am curious about how common it is.

admin answers:

Just as common as in the general population. There’s this stereotype purveyed by the popular media that all people with aspergers or more sever autistic spectrum disorders are savants or really dedicated to one particular subject.

What you see on TV are only the people who they deem interesting enough to show you. Who’s more interesting? An autistic artist or a “normal” autistic person who doesn’t really specialize in one thing? Most people with a disorder such as aspergers or autism do not have one special interest.

Question?: Asperger Syndrome In Adults

Michael asks…

What would you like to ask?How do I get an Adult diagnosis of Asperger’s syndrome?

i think i may have asperger.s syndome. i been reading a lot on it and i think now i had it for years so how do i get a diagnosis what tests can be done?

what are the most prolims with Asperger‘s syndrome?

please help thanks

admin answers:

If you are sure you have Asperger syndrome you need to go and see your doctor and ask him to refer you to a clinical psychologist, preferably one who specialises in AS. It is possible to get a diagnosis of AS as an adult. I have a relative who we always thought was a bit eccentric, he was diagnosed as having AS at 69 years old. Is it worth getting a diagnosis when you have managed all these years without one? Also a diagnosis of AS will not change you in any way other than to give you a label. I wish you good luck.

Question?: Schizophrenia Types

Jenny asks…

What distinguishes schizophrenia from other types of mental illness?

admin answers:

Schizophrenia like Bi-Polar or Uni-Polar are diseases just like diabetes or heart disease. They are caused by disruptions of the brain chemicals and the neurotransmitters. Schizophrenia is different because it causes one to have hallucinations, hear voices in their heads and sometimes paranoia that has to be treated.

Question?: Angry Autistic Child

James asks…

What actions to take when a disabled child is being bullied at school.?

I have a 13 yr. old son with Autism and he is constantly being bullied at school because he is a little different. The school has been notified on three different occasions and nothing seems to be working to prevent this from happening. What can I do?

admin answers:

Go the the district superintendent if the principal isnt doing anything. If that doesn’t work, draw your kid out of school and enroll him in a different school. Bullying an autistic kid is unacceptable! My mom is a life skills teacher and all 4 of her students are my close friends. It makes me angry to hear that someone would bully these kids. I truly hope that this is solved and he doesnt have this happen to him anymore.

Question?: What Is Autism Video

Steven asks…

What do you think about vaccinating and the link to autism?

I’ve read so many conflicting articles, but had come to the conclusion that it’s better to vaccinate than to not. My 4 month old is ready for his second set, and I am having doubts after watching a heartbreaking video on you-tube.
(I certainly wont base my decision on that video) I just want to know what others think. Have a look, if you like:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq9M7xIvdhg

admin answers:

There are studys that can prove or disprove everything, just do what you think is right. People can try to influence you all day both ways, but its a desicion you need to make. I have had so many people tell me i was a monster for imunizing my daughter, but i cant help but think how horrible i would feel if she caught one of those diseases, and died. I would rather take my chances with the autism. Im not going to watch the video, but if it really makes you feel bad, look up some of the diseases that you are protecting your baby from, and you will feel better about it. Your a good mom for doing your homework about this. Dont let anyonemake you think your making the wrong choice either way.

Question?: Rett Syndrome

Donald asks…

Does anyone know where I can find information on males with Rett Syndrome?

I need information on how it affects their physical health. And most importantly there bones. I only need this information on males, and not females. Since males don’t usually survive birth if they have retts then it is making it hard to find information on it. Please help?

admin answers:

Hello…my daughter has Rett Syndrome so I know a little bit. Males usually do survive birth but don’t typically live for more than a year. Males who have an extra X chromosome (XXY instead of XY) are like girls with RS and have a comparable lifespan and symptoms. I think you are going to have a hard time finding info on bone denisity. I don’t think it is publicly available even on the female population. Research is still ongoing and the majority of it just started in ’99, so I doubt you will find any info. My daughter is part of the RS natural history research and they have not published the info yet, but bone density is one of the things it will cover. But you can try searching these sites: www.rettsyndrome.org and www.rsrf.org
