Question?: Schizophrenia Medication

Laura asks…

Is schizophrenia managable without medication or therapy?

My Girlfriend has Schizophrenia, she says she will never take medication for it or go get therapy. (her dad has convinced her that medications are not for mental illness) As for therapy, she doesn’t want to pay for it. Apparently she has had something telling her to hurt ME a couple times before. I love her very much but I don’t want to live the rest of my life worrying about my safety. Is it possible to control the symptoms without medication or therapy?

admin answers:

Sorry, but diet and exercise aren’t usually effective for controlling mental illness. Unless there is an “alternative” treatment that would be effective (do some research) then no…her illness cannot be controlled by doing nothing.

Question?: Schizophrenia Medication

Linda asks…

Has a medication for schizophrenia worked for you?

I have schizophrenia. As much as I hate taking medication, I’d rather do that than hear an annoying, condescending little voice all day. Is there one that actually gets rid of them? I’ve tried Geodon for a while but it does not seem to work. I may wish switch it the next time I see a psychiatrist if there is one that actually does work.

admin answers:

I’ll share my experience with Geodon. To me, the benefits outweigh the side effects. I have been active, creative, and feeling better since taking Geodon. I am unable to nap or fall asleep so I do take 3mg. Ativan at night and that lets me sleep. I’ve actually been doing things and enjoying them. I have lost 30 pounds of the 40 I gained while on resperidol. I have been on 55 different combinations of meds and this is by far the best one! Side effects: Hypomania since starting med. Loss of apetite. Periods ceased. Agitation and restlessness most likely from the hypomania. Increased spending and talking all from the hypomania. I did lose my job though because concentration just isn’t there. But I am on Social Security Disability. I purchase Geodon through reputable http://www.gofmanpharmacy.com/ they’ve been very reliable so far. Check this FDA link about Geodon http://google2.fda.gov/search?client=FDAgov&site=FDAgov-Recalls-Safety|FDAgov-Consumers|FDAgov-WarningLetters-ICECI|FDAgov-ImportAlerts-Industry|FDAgov-MedWatch-Safety|FDAgov-Section-Drugs&output=xml_no_dtd&proxystylesheet=FDAgov&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&as_q=geodon&num=20&btnG=Search&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&restrictBox=FDAgov-Recalls-Safety&restrictBox=FDAgov-Consumers&restrictBox=Medwatch&restrictBox=FDAgov-WarningLetters-ICECI&restrictBox=FDAgov-ImportAlerts-Industry&restrictBox=FDAgov-Section-Drugs&lr=&as_ft=i&as_filetype=&as_occt=any&as_dt=i&as_sitesearch=&sort=date
Hope i helped.

Question?: Schizophrenia Medication

Maria asks…

How do you get rid of restlessness from new medication for schizophrenia?

I’m on a new medication for schizophrenia called saphris and it’s making me REALLY restless and drowsy,i can’t sleep or anything .I go back to my psychiatrist in 9 days to see how the medication is going but i can’t not go to sleep why is this happening, how do you get rid of it? thanks a bunch xx

admin answers:

These symptoms may decrease or go away altogether once you get more used to the medicine. Of course tell your doctor any side effects as he may adjust your medication, change it, or add another. I would take the medication in the morning so that it will affect your sleep the least. During the day I would take a vitamin B-complex, and a B-12 (sublingual version) to help you be less tired and have more energy. One hour before bed I would take 3 mg of melatonin, 300 mg of calcium, 300 mg of magnesium with a small amount of protein and carbs. This combo will relax your muscles and nervous system, and increase your natural sleep hormones. None of them are sedatives. So they are completely safe to take with Saphris. You can get all these supplements at Walmarts in the vitamin section. I think you will find these additions to help a lot and are also healthy for you.

Mark asks…

What are the side-effects of medication if someone is wrongly diagnosed with schizophrenia?

What are the side-effects of medication if someone is wrongly diagnosed with schizophrenia and takes medication for schizophrenia? Answers by professionals preferred. Thanks.

admin answers:

Basically, the same side effects as for any person; see www.drugs.com. View my previous answer about schizophrenia at http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110830200025AARy4IC and post questions in the schizophrenia chat rooms, and forums via page K at 8m.com

Consult a clinical psychologist, who believes in the use of the minimum amount of medications necessary. Google: “clinical psychologists; (your location)” Because they don’t prescribe, they are considerably less likely to be targeted by the sales reps from “BIG PHARMA”, who profile them psychologically and use the approach deemed to be the most effective at manipulating their type.

Go to whoever is recommended for the prescription of any necessary medications.

I have rarely read such junk answers as the one by Eduardo.

Question?: Schizophrenia Medication

Michael asks…

How long do you have to be on medication for schizophrenia?

I suffer from schizophrenia psychosis and have been prescribed medication. I don’t really want to keep taking medication for the rest of my life but I’ve been taking it for four years and I heard that pills can strip away the lining of your stomach and I’ve been having problems there as well. Lots of coffing, constipation, and sometimes I can’t even tell if I need to go to the toilet until I stand up or think really hard that I have to go.

admin answers:

It is always good to talk to your doctor about the any possible new symptoms. They may or may not be related to your medication. Coughing, constipation and the like can have a whole list of causes. There is not a medication out there, whether prescription drugs, herbal remedies or over the counter drugs that do not have possible side effects. Do not take it upon yourself to discontinue your medication if it has helped you so far. Talk to your doctor. If the drugs you are being prescribed have helped you so far, that is great. They can often be adjusted by your doctor as your body adjusts to them.

Question?: Schizophrenia Medication

Ruth asks…

Can schizophrenia medication cause these side effects?

My brother is on depokote and haldol, and is having weird side effects, such as feeling like his ankles aren’t there and as if his back is crooked and he can’t stand straight. I don’t know if this is a side effect from his medication or if it is a side effect of his illness. Anyone else experience this?
Another thing he has complained about is sleep paralysis

admin answers:

People can have weird side effects to any medication but if it is severe enough to cause him discomfort he should talk to his doctor about it. There are many choices of meds and some of the side effects related to antipsychotic use can end up irreversible. You can google AIMS if you like to see the list. (abnormal involuntary movement)

Question?: Schizophrenia Medication

Joseph asks…

Can a person live with schizophrenia without medication?

Schizophrenia runs in my family, and I’m starting to hallucinate..at least I think I am. I see flashes in the corner of my eyes every day. I sometimes see things that aren’t there, rarely, and sometimes I hear things, rarely though. If this is early signs of schizophrenia, could I live with it without medication? Because I know these are hallucinations and not real.

admin answers:

If the symptoms are mild and you can still function well enough in your work, school or other daily activities, you might be able to go without medication.

If the symptoms get worse, to where it really impairs your ability to function, you will probably have to be on medication.

Quite honestly, almost everybody with this diagnosis needs to be on medication.

The vitamins and colon cleansing aren’t really going to help.

Mark asks…

Schizophrenia Medication?

Is the medication for Schizophrenia just stuff you pick up like advil or tylenol or is it really strong and needs to be prescribed?

admin answers:

Schizophrenia is a pretty serious mental illness and if you’ve been diagnosed with this disease, you need to be properly medicated by a psychiatrist who can prescribe the right medications to ease the symptoms.
