What are the signs of a autistic (spelling is probably wrong sorry.) child?

What are some signs that your child might be autistic? Is there any clear signs or is only something a doctor can see?

I work with children and adults that have autism. Here are some signs that you should look for. If you take your child to a specialist they will look for the same thing. These are based off the guidelines of the DSM

. Does your child enjoy being swung, bounced on your knee, etc.?
____ 2. Does your child take an interest in other children?
____ 3. Does your child like climbing on things, such as up/on chairs?
____ 4. Does your child enjoy playing peek-a-boo / hide & seek?
____ *5. Pretend Play (PP): Does your child ever pretend, for example, to make a cup of tea using a toy cup and teapot, or pretend other things (pouring juice)?
____ 6. Does your child ever use his or her index finger to point, to ask for something?
____ *7. Protodeclarative Pointing (PDP): Does your child ever use his or her index finger to point, to indicate interest in something?
____ 8. Can your child play properly with small toys (e.g. Cars or blocks) without just mouthing, fiddling, or dropping them?
____ 9. Does your child ever bring objects over to you (parent), to show you something?

When you take your child to get checked out, at the appointment they will look specifically for these things:

Eye Contact: During the appointment, has the child made eye contact with you?
____ *ii. Gaze monitoring (GM): Get the child’s attention, then point across the room at an interesting object and say, “Oh Look! There’s a (name of a toy)!” Watch the child’s face. Does the child look across to see what you are pointing at? (To record a YES, make sure the child does not just look at your hand, but at the object you are pointing at).
____ *iii. Pretend Play (PP): Get the child’s attention, then give the child a miniature toy cup and teapot and say, “Can you make a cup of tea?” Does the child pretend to pour out tea and drink it? (If you can elicit an example of pretending in some other game, score a YES on this item).
____ *iv. Protodeclarative Pointing (PDP): Say to the child, “Where’s the light?” or “Show me the light.” Does the child point with their index finger at the light? (Repeat this with, “Where’s the bear?” or some other unreachable object if the child does not understand the word light. To record a YES on this item, the child must have looked up at your face around the time of pointing).
____ v. Block Tower: Can the child build a tower of blocks? (If so how many?)

Everyone with autism is different so your child may not display the “typical symtons of autism”. This is why is it important to not only observe your child in its environment, but also set up situations and take note on how ur child responds or doesnt respond to the problem.

How do i know if my 2 year old has autism?

I am curious because since he turned 2 his speech development has slowed down tremendously, he pretty much knows mommy, dada, ball, and bye, and will continually repeat them. I have been doing some of my own research but it is hard for me to really know because of the fact that i am his mother. He has a younger brother who turned 1 in August and at first his doctor said that it was because of his brother that he wasnt talking, but the 1 year old says more than my 2 year old, i just dont understand. If anybody can help me it would be greatly appreciated!

School districts do not assess children under the age of 3 years old so that is not an option yet. I also would not rely to heavily on a peditrician as very few are aware of the early signs and symptoms of autism and will say things like it will come with time or he is just a boy so he is a late talker etc. Besides language what are your other concerns. Does he use the limited language he has functionally? When he syas ball is it becaue he sees a ball or wants a ball? A child can have a simple language delay that is easy to fix and is usually totally fixable. Signs of autism include not playing with toys appropriately, not using gestures, facial expressions to communicate, not showing shared enjoyement or joint attention. When your child is playing with his favorite toy does he look at you to see if you are watching? If something funny, silly or scary happens does he look at your face to see your reaction? IF you play peek a boo or some similar game does he try to get you to do it again or do more of something fun. Also you can look for stereotypic behavior, hand flapping rocking, spinning objects over and over again, watching just the wheels on the car or truck instead of the whole toy?
These kind of social pragmatic indicators are more important for discerning autism compared to perhaps a simple speech delay. IT is not too early to investigate speech services. A speech person who specializes in working with young children does speech all with toys on the floor and play based so the kids don’t know they are in therapy and they give you wonderful ideas about how to bring out language in your child in daily activities and routines in order to further develop speech. Seek out other professionals. A developmental pediatrician or psychologist might be able to do a formal assessment. NOw adays many area have autism clinics at the children’s hospital or through MR/DD service providers taht serve children with disabilties birth through death. Where I live it is called the regional center but there are similar providers with different names depending where you live. Good luck.

Mommies to tots with autism..?

How do toddlers or kids act around other kids? Are they just kind of stand offish or shy? Do they still go play likes it nothing but just ignore the other kids? How exactly do they act around other kids? My son is possibly autistic. He is 27 months tonight we was at a birthday party at first he would only stay right by my side I took him into the bedroom to play with the other kids. I had to sit there with him let him get comfortable and then he stayed and played at first he would instantly come find me but eventually he was in there on his own for a good while. I did seek a peek a lot. Sometimes he was playing by himself and other times he was right there with a group of kids. How do they act?
Thanks! He doesn’t have a lot of symptoms of autism. He just isn’t talking much, doesn’t point to things unless he can touch them, and sometimes flaps and jumps and isn’t to hot on kids but other then that he doesn’t have any of the other symptoms (eye contact, aloofness, fixation, not responding to name etc) So if he does have it I would assume him to be mild.

My son is 2 1/2 he was diagnosed with autism at 20 months. My sister has a daycare and I try to take him up when I can so he can interact with other children. His reaction no lie is he acts like he doesn’t even see them. One little girl put her head on his lap and he never even looked down.

If he is not showing any other signs I wouldn’t be too concerned. I had me a shy little boy 18 years ago, he is just now starting to let loose, God help us all. Lol

I just pray and keep trying to encourage him to play with others. God bless
